Civic Flag for Halifax, Nova Scotia

Halifax, Nova Scotia Flag

The Halifax Regional Municipality came into existence on April 1, 1996 as a result of the amalgamation of the cities of Halifax and Dartmouth, the Town of Bedford and Halifax County Municipality. The Halifax flag is a banner of arms and features St. Andrew's cross which refers to the cross in the provincial flag symbolizing Halifax's status as the capitol of Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia flag is a reversal of the flag of Scotland which also features St Andrew's cross (also known as a saltire). At the flag's centre is a kingfisher with ancient ships in the hoist and fly centres of the flag.
